What is FSI (compliance)?

The Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) is a market-driven collaboration within the international floriculture sector, aimed at promoting sustainable production and trade. FSI has set a target for 90% of all traded volumes to be responsibly produced and sourced by 2025.

FSI compliance means that a company meets the sustainability standards set by FSI. These standards are structured around three key pillars: Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), Environmental Responsibility, and Social Responsibility. To be FSI-compliant, companies must hold both an environmental certificate and a GAP certificate. Certifications such as MPS-ABC and MPS-GAP ensure compliance with the criteria outlined in the FSI Basket of Standards. Additionally, companies operating in an FSI-designated risk country must obtain a social certificate, which can be achieved through MPS-SQ certification.

Why FSI compliancy?

Consumers and retailers are increasingly demanding sustainably grown flowers and plants. By being FSI-compliant, you demonstrate that your products are responsibly produced and meet sustainability standards. This also ensures compliance with the requirements set by traders and buyers.

Moreover, as of January 1, 2026, the majority of members and suppliers trading, selling, and settling flowers and plants via the Royal FloraHolland platform must be certified according to FSI requirements.

Steps to obtaining the MPS-ABC Certificate

Registering

You request a quotation via www.my-mps.com.

Starting up

You start with environmental record-keeping on the themes crop protection agents, fertilisers, energy, water, and waste.

Record-keeping

You record realtime or once per period (of four weeks).

Audit

After about 13 periods you will be contacted to schedule an audit.

Certification

After recording 13 periods and a successful audit you will receive an MPS-A+, -A, -B or -C qualification and corresponding certificate.

Steps to obtaining the MPS-GAP certificate

Orientation

Engage in a personal consultation with MPS regarding the MPS-GAP certification.

Initiation

Download the checklist with certification requirements and conduct an internal assessment.

Implementation

Integrate the certification requirements from the checklist into your business operations.

Internal Audit

Perform an internal audit to ensure your company meets all MPS-GAP requirements.

Certification Audit

MPS-ECAS will contact you to schedule an official audit. Upon successful completion, you will receive the MPS-GAP certificate.

Certification and FSI compliance

What is FSI?
FSI (Floriculture Sustainability Initiative) is a collaboration in the floriculture sector that promotes sustainable production and trade.

Why comply with FSI?
From 2026, FSI certification will be mandatory for many suppliers via Royal FloraHolland and is increasingly required by retailers.

We have MPS-A, MPS-GAP and GRASP certification. Is this sufficient for FSI compliance? Is GRASP not equivalent to MPS-SQ?
Yes, this is sufficient but GRASP is not equivalent to MPS-SQ. MPS-SQ (social) is currently only needed in high-risk countries.

We have MPS-ABC and MPS-GAP certification. What do I still need to do to be FSI compliant?
If the certificates are valid, you are FSI compliant. This is published on the trade portals.

Do you issue a certificate to show that you are FSI compliant?
No, this is published on trade portals, such as Floriday.

For MPS-GAP you need to have MPS-ABC certification, which means you are FSI compliant. Do you issue a logo or a certificate that we can use?
No, this is published on the trade portals. However, you can use MPS vignette (which you can download from your Customer Portal).

If I am not FSI compliant, does that also mean I can no longer deliver to Royal FloraHolland?
Royal FloraHolland’s mandatory certification is effective as of 1 January 2026 or 1 July 2027, depending on the package you purchase from them.

Does everything for Royal FloraHolland need to be arranged by 1 January or when you start auctioning again, in May for example?
In the case of seasonal products, you must be FSI compliant when you start auctioning again.

Can I also certify just one product?
MPS-ABC and MPS-GAP are company certifications and therefore apply to all your company’s ornamental products.

Administration and audit requirements

We do not have any staff. Do we still need to comply with everything?
Yes.

We keep a close track of our MPS-ABC record-keeping. Do we also need to record this information separately in MPS-GAP?
No, not separately as this will be retrieved from the MPS record-keeping platform.

Is there an annual audit for MPS-GAP?
MPS-GAP does involve an annual audit. A company audit should be conducted once every three years for small-scale growers.

For MPS-GAP you need to produce an RI&E, but our company is located in Poland. Do you have any tips for this?
Yes, you can use the template that’s available in the digital handbook.

Can you ignore any sections that do not apply to you?
Yes, there is an option to mark sections as ‘not applicable’.

Is the digital handbook integrated in the Customer Portal?
You can request this via MPS in the Customer Portal.

MPS-Compact and small-scale growers

Can you use the average of several years for MPS-Compact, as there may be a year that my annual turnover exceeds €250,000?
FSI checks the year prior to the application.

How many years does FSI review for MPS-Compact, three or five years? Or do they use an average of those years?
When you submit an application, FSI checks the previous year.

If I switch to MPS-Compact, does my current MPS-A certificate remain valid?
Yes, this will remain valid.

I have no staff but my annual turnover is above €250,000. Can I still use MPS-Compact?
No, you need to be MPS-ABC and MPS-GAP certified.

If I switch from MPS-ABC to MPS-Compact now, will I have paid for this year’s MPS-ABC for nothing?
It may be wise to switch to MPS-Compact as of 1 January 2026.
